James Gunn confirms that Peacemaker isn't straight and that the idea to open up the character's sexual orientation actually came from John Cena. After first appearing in last summer's The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker, aka Christopher Smith (Cena), got his own spinoff show on HBO Max.

During their violent confrontation, Chris is forced to make peace with the fact his father is not a good person and never has been. Not only did Auggie enable the "boxing" match that resulted in his brother Keith's death when he was just a young boy, but Chris himself was subjected to his father's merciless abuse from a young age, which continued well into adulthood. For most of the series, Chris is depicted as wanting Auggie's approval, and it takes the latter injuring his pet eagle, Eagly, to make him decide to murder his monstrous father.

Peacemaker's line in The Suicide Squad does a lot more than confirm he is comfortable in his masculinity; it is actually the first subtle confirmation of his bisexual orientation. This is a detail that is revisited again in his own TV show, most notably in Episode 1.

The show picks up where The Suicide Squad left off, with Peacemaker in the hospital after an injury caused by questionable heroics. Gunn wrote all eight episodes of Peacemaker and directs most of them as well, delivering a raunchy, violent, and hilarious take on the superhero genre.

Another detail worth noting is Peacemaker's interactions with other men. In The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker has a lot of homoerotic moments with Bloodsport. In one scene, Peacemaker and Bloodsport have a proverbial dick-measuring contest as they show off their guns and other weaponry to each other as a way of proving who has the better arsenal.

While Christopher Smith's sexuality was never explicitly discussed in the comics, director James Gunn says that his version of Peacemaker was "always" bisexual.
